In 1978 , Takao Miyashita joined Kyokushin Kai Honbu dojo in Tokyo, Japan at the age of 15 and became a direct disciple of the karate legend " Masutatsu Oyama". Takao Miyashita was awarded the title of Sensei, third degree black belt in the Kyokushin Kai NY dojo in 2011. He has trained in and taught Karate for over 25 years. He left Kyokushin Kai in February of 2022 and founded a new style named "Shojin Kai Karate" in May of the same year.
Directly translated from the Japanese, the word "Shojin" means a devotion to pursue a perfect state of mind, banishing worldly thoughts and making an effort to keep striving for limitless self-perfection. "Kai" means an association. Shojin Kai is a brand-new karate school to contribute to the creation of a peaceful and healthy human society. Shojin Kai will provide students with traditional and modern karate training to help them achieve a mentally and physically healthy life. With this karate students will gain self-defense skills and also receive the benefits of weight loss, stress release, enhanced stamina, the power to focus and self-confidence. Shihan Takao Miyashita has high hopes that Shojin Kai will not only serve as a mere martial arts school, but it also aims to pass the beautiful budo (martial way) spirit which has faded away in recent years onto as many people as it can from generation to generation.
